Congratulations to our CPS teams for representing us proudly at this year’s Robocup Jr WA State Finals! It was wonderful and extremely satisfying to see the student’s hardwork throughout the year pay off on the competition days.
As mentioned in the lead-up, our 4 teams from year 5 & 6 were competing in the in the new category called the ‘Mighty Maisy Maze’ which required them to design and build a lego EV3 or Spike robot and code it to autonomously navigate a walled maze. While traversing the maze, the robots were also required to locate numerous victims throughout, and indicate how many victims they had located on exit.
On the day our teams competed against a wide range of other primary and high-school teams from all over the state. Out of the 14 teams, CPS students performed extremely well, picking up many points across the eight rounds. While our two year 5 teams finished mid table, and our year 6 girls team finished just out of the placings, amazingly, our year 6 boys team took out first place!
Congratulations to all students who took part across the weekend. It was a brilliant weekend, and it was great to see you all have so much fun and be up for the challenge. You should all be very proud of your team work, problem solving, reslience – and the results you achieved. Outstanding. Thank you also to the parents who showed your support on the days.
I am already looking forward to seeing the year 5 students put their hand up again next year, as well as welcome the new crop of ‘coders’ from our lower years as they progress. Students from years 3 & 4 that are interested in participating in the new Coder Dojo program on a Wednesday afterschool, please complete your expression of interest through the following link. This weekend, Churchlands Primary School will be heavily represented at this year’s Robocup Jr competition, being held for the first time at All Saints College, Bullcreek.
Our four representing teams, will be competing in a new category – Mighty Maisy! Mighty Maisy replaces the open competition and allows students to develop their problem solving skills when coding their robot to navigate a walled maze in search for ‘victims’. The new category removes some complexity from the situation to allows students to build and focus the fundamentals.

While we had 6 very hard working teams prepare for the event, this year, we were only allowed to enter 4 teams. Congratulations to the above students who helped their team gain entry to the event. Teams were selected on merit based on a number of factors, inlcuding preparation, success and team work.
The four teams are busily making final preparations before the competition days this weekend. We wish them the best of luck and will report back in two weeks time on how we all went!
