This week, our school proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week, a time to honor the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. While the official celebrations take place in the first week of July, our NAIDOC Week activities provided a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to immerse themselves in First Nations cultures and histories, celebrating the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Our week began with a special assembly where we introduced the meaning of NAIDOC Week and its importance. A highlight of the assembly was our heartfelt rendition of the Wanjoo song, led by Mr. Howesmith, as we invited everyone to join in and share in the spirit of welcome and unity.
Throughout the week, students participated in engaging and educational activities that deepened their connection to Aboriginal culture and traditions:
- Scavenger Hunt: Students explored various areas of our school to learn about the Noongar seasons, the Emu in the Sky artwork, the bush tucker garden, Noongar names for animals at the frog pond, and the “naughty dogs.”
- Wadumbah Noongar Dance Group Performance: We were captivated by a vibrant performance that used dance and song to share stories and history, creating an unforgettable cultural experience.
- Noongar Storytime: Students listened to traditional Noongar stories, enriching their understanding of Indigenous storytelling and its significance.
- Bush Tucker Tasting: A delicious exploration of native foods introduced students to the flavors and traditions of bush tucker.
- Noongar Language Crossword: This fun activity gave students the chance to expand their vocabulary in the Noongar language.
These activities were a meaningful way for our students and staff to connect with and celebrate Aboriginal culture. NAIDOC Week continues to inspire us all to learn, respect, and embrace the rich traditions of the First Nations peoples.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making our NAIDOC Week celebrations so memorable!
